2 Advanced Talwar class Frigates closing in on trials in Russia
On 20th November 2018, India and Russia concluded a deal for 4 Project-11356M Frigates for the Indian Navy as a follow-on of already in service Talwar class Frigates (Project-11356M) acquired way back in the 2010s. 2 ships hulls were lying idle in Russian Yantar shipyard without completion which India bought alongside a package for additional 2 ships to be built in Goa shipyard in India under technology transfer.
The construction of the first two advanced Talwar class frigates at Russia’s Yantar Shipyard is progressing steadily and is poised to enter the trial phase very soon with delivery expected in 2024.
The third and fourth frigates are being built at Goa Shipyard Limited that will be delivered in 2026 and 2027 respectively.
These 4 ships will be fitted with either Shitl-1 SAM or indigenous VL-SRSAM for air defense role, 8 VLS for BrahMos anti-ship/land attack cruise missiles, 1 × 100mm A-190E naval gun, 2 × AK-630 CIWS, 2 × Kashtan CIWS, 2 × twin 533mm DTA-53-11356 torpedo tubes, 1 × RBU-6000 (RPK-8) rocket launcher.
