BrahMos-NG (NG stands for Next Generation) |
CEO and MD BrahMos Aerospace Atul Dinkar Rane speaking to DD said that the Joint development of the BrahMos-NG (Next Generation ) has commenced with Russia and it will take nearly four years before the missile is ready for developmental trials. Rane said both countries are trying to achieve speeds that are nearly 1 1/2 times more than the existing missile variant of BrahMos.
BrahMos-NG will weigh around 1.5 tons which is nearly half the weight when compares to the existing BrahMos that is close to 3tons. BrahMos-NG is primarily been designed as an Air-Launched Cruise Missile Program that can be used for Anti-Ship missile (AShM) or as Anti-surface missile (ASM) against high-value targets.
BrahMos-NG will have a range of 300-450km and will make use of its kinetic speed and warhead to have a devastating impact on its target. Near Hypersonic speeds of the missiles will also make it near impossible to be intercepted by any air defense system. BrahMos-NG too will be carrying out evasive “S-maneuver” shortly before impact, making it difficult to shoot down at close range.
BrahMos-NG being a light missile can be adapted to be carried on all aircraft types in service with the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Navy that includes combat jets and Transport / Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
