HAL’s scale High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) Prototype will fly this year

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bengaluru-based technology start-up NewSpace Research and Technologies (NRT) have completed the feasibility study and the first sub-scale prototype will fly by Q3 of 2022 as per the latest media report.

HAL has asked for 50 crores for the development of the sub-scale prototype that will validate the technologies and design before work on the 500kg High-altitude platform station (HAPS) will begin soon after and will be ready for developmental trials in the next 4 years.

HAPS will have an endurance of three months and can cruise at 65,000ft. Customized payload development is already taking place. India’s NAL is also developing its own for Civilian usage that has an endurance of six months.
