EOTS sensors on board American F-35 and Chinese J-20 stealth fighters |
Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE), a DRDO lab that specializes in the development of Vision and Electro-optical fire control systems has issued tenders for fabrication and installation of the IR Sensor for airborne applications to be installed on the Hawker Beechcraft’s Hawker 800 testbed aircraft that is on lease to DRDO and previously were used to test Uttam AESA Fire Control Radar.

IRDE seems to be testing India’s own Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) that combines forward-looking infrared (FLIR) and infrared search and track (IRST) functionality for the precision air-to-air and air-to-surface targeting capability. Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) had confirmed that it is working on a sensor package that they won’t call is similar to the EOTS that was seen for the first time on the F-35 program but something on the similar lines.

As can be seen in the tender documents, it has one forward-looking infrared sensor and one rear-looking infrared sensor positioned in such a way that it can provide high-resolution imagery of the terrain and can also offer spot tracking at greatly increased standoff ranges. DRDO claims to have developed a durable sapphire window that might later find its way into the production variant of the system.
