Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that it has given Approval-In-Principle for 4 Make-I’ (Government Funded) Projects  will involve Government funding of 90%, released in a phased manner and based on the progress for the development of Communication Equipment (IAF). Airborne Jammer, Airborne Electro-Optical Pod and Light Tanks (Army).

This is for the first time, MoD has issued such big-ticket items to the Private sector. Airborne Jammer likely will be based on the German-origin Grob G 180 SPn aircraft that has been recently acquired by the Tata Group along with the intellectual property (IP) rights.

TASL is currently modifying the aircraft to fit the special payloads as per the requirements of the IAF. This integration will convert the jet into a platform that can perform cross-border surveillance, signal intelligence, and many more missions. Grob G 180 SPn is designed to fly at 41,000ft altitude with a maximum altitude of 45,000ft.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE) are already working on a 35-ton Light Tank that will be based on the chassis of the Next Generation Main Battle Tank (NGMBT) developed by the CVRDE. L&T will be sourcing a 105mm turret from a European vendor and will use Spade 500 Steel Plates-Medium Hardness Armour As Per Cda-99 Specification on the tank. CVRDE will likely use Russian designed V92S2 Powerpack, the same that is used on the T-90MBTs but there are exists a possibility that the production version will get Indigenous power packs.

Airborne Electro-Optical Pod for fixed, rotary-wing aircraft & UAV is been worked on by many Indian Private sector companies.
