Arihant SSBN and its sister boats to carry SMART torpedoes to target enemy submarines at long range |
You all have
come across SMART missile torpedo system that DRDO tested twice in 2020 and
2021, whose full abbreviation is Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of
Torpedo.
The SMART torpedo uses a solid rocket motor of K-15 Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) and it has completed its ground-based trials and interestingly its launcher is now being modified so that it can be integrated into the Arihant class Nuclear-Powered Ballistic Missile (SSBN) submarines.
This is significant as the two 6,000 tonnes Arihant class SSBNs can now carry a total of 12 SMART torpedoes that will give the Indian Navy the capability to target enemy submarines from 650 kilometers range.
The 7,000-tonne S4 submarine is currently in final refit and the hull of the S4-star has been completed and both the S4 and S4-star will be able to carry 24 SMART torpedoes or 8 K-4 SLBMs or 8 K-5 SLBMs.
