New Delhi: The Indian Army has placed an order for around 2,000 drones. Some of these will be used to transport vital supplies to forward posts. The rest of the drones will be used for surveillance. The Telegraph has quoted Smit Shah, President of the Drone Federation of India, as saying that many manufacturers have bid for this. This order has to be completed as soon as possible. Their dire need is being felt after the skirmishes between the armies of India and China in Ladakh and recently in Arunachal Pradesh.

In Ladakh, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China has increased the number of its troops in the forward area. In Aksai Chin, it has increased the infrastructure by building several helipads. Its activities are continuously intensified even in tense areas like Demchok and Galvan. In view of this, it has become necessary to keep an eye on China’s every move. Helipads have made it easier for China to send its troops to forward positions more quickly.

Where will drones be used?

About 400 drones are being procured for logistical support. At the same time, 1,500 will be taken for different surveillance works. Drones used for logistics can carry loads ranging from 5 kg to 40 kg. Mainly their work will be to provide different types of supplies to the soldiers in forward posts. These drones will cover a distance of 5 km to 20 km.

The use of drones has increased in wars

Tests are being done to ensure that the drone can fly at high altitudes. For example, many major bases and forward posts in Ladakh have an altitude of 12,000 feet to 15,000 feet. Daulat Bagh Oldi, the highest altitude base of the Indian Air Force, is at 18,000 feet. Aircrafts landing there keep their engines running. They can only stay on the ground for about 15 minutes.

In June 2020, there was a violent clash between the soldiers of India and China in Ladakh. After this, the pace of buying drones of India has increased. In the last one year, drone attacks have become a daily thing in the Russia-Ukraine war. In the war between the two countries, Ukraine is using drones to target Russian soldiers. Russia does the same for attacks on Ukraine.
