In a sign of strengthening defense relations, Brazil has shown interest in acquiring India-made Nilgiri-class frigates equipped with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. India had earlier proposed a modified version of its Nilgiri-class frigates to the Brazilian Navy, and this proposal aligns with Brazil’s efforts to enhance its naval strength through the ongoing Tamandaré-class frigate program.
At present, Brazil operates one Tamandaré-class frigate, the ‘Jerônimo de Albuquerque,’ with three more under construction. Built by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, these vessels have a displacement of about 3,500 tons. In contrast, India’s Nilgiri-class frigates are significantly larger, with a displacement of 6,670 tons.
Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL), the shipyard responsible for constructing the Nilgiri-class frigates, has reportedly offered Brazil a Transfer of Technology (ToT) deal, allowing Brazil to locally produce these sophisticated warships within its own shipyards.
The Brazilian Navy is currently considering the acquisition of 4-6 new frigates, with the primary interest being the integration of the BrahMos cruise missile into its coastal defense system. Brazil has shown particular enthusiasm for this highly capable missile system.
This potential agreement marks a significant milestone for India’s defense exports and demonstrates the strengthening strategic partnership between the two countries. It also highlights India’s rising stature as a global leader in shipbuilding and defense technologies.
