France offers Full Technology Transfer for AMCA's 110kN Engine and Underwater Drones, Commits to Supporting India's Nuclear Attack Submarines Program
In a significant boost to India's defense capabilities, France has proposed a complete transfer of technology (ToT) for 110-kiloNewton thrust aircraft engines and underwater drones, while also offering support for the construction of India's nuclear attack submarines.
These topics are expected to dominate the upcoming India-France strategic dialogue between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Emmanuel Bonne, the diplomatic advisor to French President Emmanuel Macron, set to take place in Paris.
This strategic meeting comes at a critical juncture, as India is actively pursuing advancements in its naval strength, with the Indian Navy having reportedly raised the need for nuclear attack submarines with the government.
France’s offer to assist with this objective, coupled with its willingness to provide full-spectrum autonomous systems for air, surface, and underwater platforms, could significantly enhance India’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
Another major focus of the dialogue will be potential collaboration on aircraft engine development. Safran, a French aerospace company with a history of partnership with India’s space agency ISRO, has proposed to co-design, develop, certify, and manufacture 110 kN engines for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program.
This offer from Safran includes 100% technology transfer, even for the crucial hot sections of the engine, ensuring Indian ownership of the jointly developed engine and the freedom to export it without any restrictions.
The growing strategic defense partnership between India and France is seen as vital to India’s goal of achieving strategic autonomy. The two countries are already collaborating in various defense sectors, including the possible acquisition of Rafale-Maritime fighters for India’s aircraft carriers and the co-production of Kalvari-class diesel attack submarines.
Beyond defense, the strategic dialogue is expected to cover a broad range of issues that are of mutual interest. These discussions are likely to include expanding cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in the Indian Ocean, as well as addressing geopolitical concerns such as the Middle East conflict, attacks on commercial shipping by Houthis in the Red Sea, the situation in Bangladesh, and the upcoming elections in Sri Lanka.
France’s extensive support for India’s defense modernization efforts, which spans critical technologies and strategic cooperation, underscores the deepening trust and alignment between the two nations. This also reflects France’s commitment to helping India assert its position as a significant power in the Indo-Pacific region.
