HAL all set to finalize F-414 engine deal this year; Significant production to be outsourced to Indian Private Sector
Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Dr. D.K. Sunil, has confirmed, that the agreement with General Electric (GE) Aerospace for the F-414 engine is on track to be finalized by the end of this year. The F-414 engine will power the Tejas Mk2, a major advancement in India’s indigenous light combat aircraft development.
HAL plans to manufacture the F-414 engine at its upcoming facility in Bangalore, while strategically outsourcing 40-50% of the production to Indian private sector companies. Key players such as MTAR Technologies, L&T, Godrej, Azad Engineering, and INDO-MIM will contribute to the production process. This move aims to tap into the expertise of domestic aerospace component manufacturers, boosting the country’s defence industry ecosystem.
A notable feature of the F-414 engine program is that more than 80% of the technology transfer (ToT) will be provided. This significant transfer of knowledge will enhance India's engine manufacturing capabilities, ensuring the sustainability of the Tejas Mk2 program. Notably, the same engine will also be used in the Mark-1 version of the 5th Generation AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft), further underlining the engine’s importance.
The finalization of the deal with GE Aerospace marks a crucial step in India’s defense modernization efforts. By acquiring the F-414 engine and building indigenous manufacturing capacity, India is cementing its role as a key player in the global aerospace sector.
