India’s TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), a subsidiary of TATA Motors, has entered into a landmark agreement with the Moroccan government to set up a factory focused on producing military equipment. The primary focus of this new facility will be the production of the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8x8 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) for the Moroccan Land Forces.
This partnership marks a significant step for TATA as it strengthens its foothold in Africa's defense sector. Last year, TATA supplied 90 units of 6x6 military trucks to the Royal Moroccan Army, which further solidified their relationship. Now, with the establishment of this factory in Casablanca, it will be India's first overseas defense manufacturing plant.
The facility is expected to become operational within the next year, with a production capacity of 100 combat vehicles annually. The first batch of WhAP vehicles is projected to be ready in about 18 months. These vehicles have already been fielded by the Indian Army, having been deployed in Ladakh.
The WhAP 8x8 was co-developed by TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Prior to its selection by Morocco, the vehicle underwent rigorous testing in the desert regions of Africa. Although the exact value of the contract has not been disclosed, the new factory is expected to generate around 350 jobs.
This agreement not only highlights TATA's entry into the expanding African defense market but also establishes TASL Morocco as a subsidiary aimed at meeting the growing regional demand for military vehicles.
