HAL to Commence Testing of Dual Rack Pylons for Tejas Mk1A in 2025, Boosting Close Combat Firepower

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is preparing to begin flight tests for dual rack pylons on the Tejas Mk1A fighter jets in 2025, a move that will significantly increase the aircraft's close combat firepower. These new pylons will enable the Tejas Mk1A to carry two short-range air-to-air missiles (CCMs), such as the Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) or the Python-5, on each pylon, effectively doubling its missile-carrying capability for close-range engagements.

This development follows successful wind tunnel testing of a scale model of the Tejas Mk1A fitted with the dual rack pylon configuration. The tests provided essential aerodynamic data and insights on missile separation. HAL also conducted comprehensive computer simulations to evaluate how launching two missiles from one pylon would affect the aircraft's overall performance, with a particular focus on the risk of gas ingestion into the engine air intake during launches.

Armed with the results from these tests, HAL is set to begin captive flight trials next year. These trials will evaluate the performance of the pylons and missile integration in various flight conditions, with live missile firing tests scheduled for later in 2025.

Adding dual rack pylons will allow the Tejas Mk1A to carry more close combat missiles than its current loadout, which will greatly improve its ability to engage enemy aircraft in dogfights. This increase in firepower will be vital in enhancing the Tejas Mk1A's survivability and effectiveness during intense combat scenarios where it may face multiple adversaries in close-range combat.

With the capability to carry two ASRAAM or Python-5 missiles per pylon, the Tejas Mk1A will be able to engage more targets quickly, further cementing its role as a critical frontline fighter for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This upgrade, along with other enhancements planned for the Mk1A variant, reinforces the Tejas' importance as a vital part of India’s air defense strategy.
