IAF investigates Anti-Drone potential of Apache and LCH Prachand Attack Helicopters following US Military success

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is investigating the potential of deploying its AH-64 Apache and indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand in anti-drone operations. This initiative follows a successful demonstration by the US Army, where an Apache, equipped with a modified AGM-114 Hellfire missile, shot down a drone during an exercise in Saudi Arabia.

The increasing use of armed drones and remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs) in global conflicts, such as those in Ukraine and the Middle East, underscores the need for effective countermeasures. These drones often bypass traditional air defense systems, presenting a significant threat on the battlefield.

While Israel has long used Apache helicopters for counter-drone missions, the recent US Army trial has further inspired the IAF to explore similar capabilities. The IAF, which operates 22 Apache helicopters purchased in 2015, is evaluating them for anti-drone tasks. However, the focus is increasingly on the domestically developed LCH Prachand.

Inducted into service in October 2022, the LCH Prachand has several qualities that make it well-suited for anti-drone missions. Its agility, speed, and high climb rate allow it to intercept drones effectively. Former HAL Chief Test Pilot (Rotary Wing), Wg Cdr (retd) Unni Pillai, emphasized the LCH’s capabilities, noting, "the LCH exactly fills this slot with its speed and mix of guns and missiles."

The LCH is especially valuable for operations in high-altitude environments like Leh, where its smaller radar signature and advanced warning systems boost its survivability. Its current armament includes MBDA’s Mistral air-to-air missiles and a 20mm cannon, both potentially effective against drones. As an indigenous platform, the LCH offers the flexibility of rapid customization for anti-drone warfare through Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and India’s growing defense industry.

By considering both the Apache and LCH Prachand for anti-drone roles, the IAF is taking proactive steps to counter emerging threats in modern warfare. Utilizing these assets, especially the adaptable LCH, the IAF aims to strengthen its counter-drone capabilities while maintaining a technological advantage on the battlefield.
