The Indian Air Force (IAF) is intensifying its push to expand its mid-air refueling capabilities, with a revised ambition to procure 12 new refuelers—double the previous plan to acquire 6 such aircraft. This move is part of a larger strategy to strengthen its aerial combat readiness, especially in the wake of securing approvals for the indigenous Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) program, covering Netra Mk1A, Mk2, and Mk3 variants.

Originally, the IAF planned to buy 6 mid-air refuelers to complement its existing fleet of 6 Ilyushin IL-78MKI refueling aircraft. However, with the revised target, the IAF is aiming to acquire 12 additional platforms, effectively increasing the overall fleet size to 18. This expansion is vital for extending the operational reach of the IAF’s fighter jets, especially in a scenario where India might face threats on multiple fronts.

The IAF’s current fleet of IL-78MKI tankers, purchased between 2003 and 2004, has been a critical component of its air power projection. However, the aging fleet is in need of modernization or replacement to maintain operational efficiency.

One of the options under consideration is a proposal from a joint venture between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). This proposal focuses on converting older civilian Boeing aircraft into mid-air refueling platforms within India, offering a cost-effective solution.

The IAF is also revisiting the Airbus A330 MRTT (Multi-Role Tanker Transport) platform, which had been considered in the past but was deemed too expensive. To address cost concerns, the IAF is now open to the idea of acquiring second-hand Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft to reduce procurement costs.

In addition, Embraer has put forward its C-390M transport aircraft as a potential option for the IAF’s Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) requirements. Embraer has also proposed developing a dedicated mid-air refueler variant based on the C-390M platform, which could be a viable option for the IAF.

While the IAF has not yet finalized the exact procurement path, reports indicate that a multi-platform approach could be considered to meet the varied refueling needs. This could involve a mix of converted civilian aircraft, used A330 MRTTs, and potentially the C-390M-based tanker.

The IAF’s renewed focus on expanding its mid-air refueling fleet reflects a strategic shift aimed at enhancing its overall air power and operational flexibility. Whether the IAF chooses a single platform or opts for a combination of different refueling aircraft, the decision will significantly impact its future aerial refueling capabilities and combat readiness.
