The Indian Air Force (IAF) has begun receiving Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) precision-guided bombing kits, a major enhancement for its Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas fleet. This strategic acquisition, approved in 2022 under delegated financial powers, will significantly improve the Tejas' combat capabilities, allowing it to execute more accurate and precise strikes.

The JDAM kits, which convert traditional unguided bombs into precision-guided "smart" munitions, will provide the Tejas with the ability to engage enemy bunkers and airstrips from distances exceeding 80 kilometers. This upgrade marks a substantial boost to the fighter jet’s operational effectiveness, positioning the Tejas as a more potent force in aerial combat.

According to government sources, the integration of these JDAM kits will enhance the Tejas' capacity to perform missions like the Balakot airstrike with even greater accuracy. The JDAM's guidance system, which combines an inertial navigation system (INS) and a global positioning system (GPS), ensures bombs are delivered with pinpoint precision, reducing the risk of collateral damage.

The addition of JDAM kits to the Tejas fleet is a significant step in India's ongoing efforts to modernize its military forces. This move also highlights the growing role of precision-guided munitions in modern warfare. With the advanced targeting capabilities offered by JDAM, the Tejas is set to become a critical asset in India's defense strategy.
