Trials Begin for BvS10 All-Terrain Vehicles in India

India is set to explore the capabilities of the BvS10 all-terrain vehicle as trials with the Indian Army commence this month. This initiative comes after British multinational BAE Systems and Indian multinational Larsen & Toubro Limited entered into a licensing and manufacturing agreement to offer the BvS10 to the Indian Armed Forces.

The BvS10 all-terrain vehicle is already in service with several countries, including Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and with orders in progress for the German Army. The US Army has also scheduled the procurement of 110 unarmored “Beowulf” variants from BAE Systems, following their success in the Cold Weather All-Terrain Vehicle program.

A specialized variant, known as the BvS10-Sindhu, has been developed in collaboration with Swedish manufacturer BAE Systems Hägglunds to meet the specific requirements of the Indian Armed Forces.

Arun Ramchandani, Head of L&T Defence and Executive Vice President, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership and its potential to bolster L&T’s Armoured Systems business. He noted that the BvS10-Sindhu is well-suited for the challenging terrains and climatic conditions in which it is expected to operate.

The BvS10 vehicle offers versatility in complex terrains such as snow, ice, rock, sand, mud, swamps, and steep mountains. It also boasts amphibious capabilities for operations in flooded areas or coastal waters. The vehicle has various configurations, including personnel transport, command and control, vehicle repair and recovery, logistics support, situational awareness, ambulance, mounted lethality, and support weapons.

Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, Managing Director of BAE Systems Hägglunds, highlighted the BvS10’s mobility, flexibility, and suitability for extreme climatic conditions. He emphasized the importance of this collaboration with Larsen & Toubro for expanding into the Indo-Pacific market and addressing the critical needs of the Indian Army.
