France offers SCALP Naval / MdCN Cruise Missile for Indian Kalvari class submarines

France has offered to outfit the six Kalvari class submarines, including the three newly bought by India, with the SCALP Naval / MdCN (Missile de Croisière Naval) subsonic cruise missile. The SCALP Naval / MdCN cruise missile is now deployed on the French nuclear-powered attack submarine Barracuda, with France purchasing 50 of these missiles.

The SCALP Naval / MdCN cruise missile is a cutting-edge armament system developed for naval use. It has a good range and precision, making it a vital addition to the Indian Navy’s Kalvari class submarines’ armament.

India already operates an air-launched variant of the SCALP cruise missile, which has already been equipped on the Indian Air Force’s fleet of 36 Dassault Rafale aircraft, and the same missile will be integrated into the Indian Navy’s upcoming order of 26 Rafale M aircraft, but the air-launched variant of SCALP cruise has a different Airframe and has a stealth optimised design, whereas SCALP Naval / MdCN has a cylindrical shape.

The SCALP Naval / MdCN cruise missile is intended to be very adaptable, with a range of more than 500 km. According to defence specialists, it has a range of roughly 700 km.

The innovative technology and characteristics of the SCALP Naval / MdCN cruise missile assure its efficacy and stealth. The booster is discarded after the boost phase, and the missile’s two wings and three rear fins deploy. A miniature turbojet engine powers the missile, providing the required propulsion for its objective.

The incorporation of the SCALP Naval / MdCN cruise missile into the Indian Navy’s Kalvari class submarines will improve their offensive capabilities while also contributing to the country’s maritime security. These submarines’ land assault capabilities will provide substantial deterrent against possible threats and strengthen India’s defence capabilities in the region.
