DRDO developing 300 KW Laser Based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW)

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is spearheading a transformative era in aerial defense, unveiling plans for a groundbreaking weapon— a nimble 100-kilowatt Directed-Energy Weapon (DEW). This cutting-edge laser not only offers a cost-effective solution but also presents a near-limitless capability to neutralize low-flying drones, reminiscent of those employed by Russian forces during the Ukraine War.

Mobile Defense Revolution: The 100-kW DEW

Envision a scenario where a powerful laser is mounted on a maneuverable 8×8 truck, providing mobile protection as it accompanies troops on the move. This is the futuristic vision of the 100-kW DEW, designed to counter a growing threat posed by loitering ammunition and armed quadcopters. These small, agile drones have the potential to wreak havoc on unsuspecting forces, but the swift deployment of the DEW could render them harmless before they approach too closely.

Beyond Aerial Nuisances: DRDO’s Ambitious Plans

While the 100-kW DEW focuses on tackling aerial nuisances, DRDO is not stopping there. The organization is actively developing a 300 kW-class DEW, capable of safeguarding static sites from a broader spectrum of adversaries. This includes countering rockets, artillery, mortars (RAM), and even unmanned aerial systems (UAS). More impressively, it holds the potential to intercept incoming cruise missiles, providing a multi-layered defense against diverse threats.

Technological Advancements and Future Prospects

The development of such a potent DEW demands time and continuous technological advancements. Although the 100-kW version is expected to undergo demonstrations in the near future, the larger 300 kW system may take a few years to materialize. Nevertheless, DRDO’s unwavering commitment to DEW technology underscores India’s proactive stance in modernizing its defense capabilities.

As DRDO progresses in its pursuit of laser dominance, it not only aims to revolutionize mobile defense but also to fortify static sites against a myriad of threats. The journey towards advanced Directed-Energy Weapons reflects India’s dedication to staying ahead in the ever-evolving landscape of defense technology.
