DRDO working on Arjun Mk2 with Improved Protection

The Indian Army is on the brink of receiving its first batch of domestically produced Arjun Mk-1A tanks, marking a significant stride towards achieving armored dominance. However, attention has swiftly shifted to the future – the Arjun Mk2, a more nimble variant designed to adapt to the changing dynamics of the battlefield.

With the order for 118 Arjun Mk-1A tanks placed in 2020, substantial upgrades have been incorporated based on feedback from the Army, focusing on firepower, mobility, and survivability. Yet, concerns persist regarding the Mk-1A’s weight, currently at 68.6 tons, which limits its maneuverability in specific terrains.

The Defense Research and Development Organization’s (DRDO) Heavy Vehicles Factory is actively engaged in developing the Mk2, targeting a significant weight reduction of over 3 tons compared to the Mk-1A. Achieving this involves a redesign of hull and turret structures, incorporating lighter yet high-strength materials.

In the wake of the Ukraine war, where conventional tanks faced vulnerabilities against low-cost, kamikaze drones, the Arjun Mk2 is strategically designed to counter such threats. It integrates enhanced protection measures against aerial attacks, addressing a critical aspect exposed by recent conflicts.

While the Future Main Battle Tank (FMBT) program in India, envisioned as a 55-ton replacement for aging T-72s, is yet to take off, the underwhelming performance of Russian T-72s and T-90s in Ukraine against modern anti-tank-guided missiles has raised doubts about their capabilities. This has propelled support for the Arjun platform, prompting speculation that the Army might endorse the Mk2 program before the completion of Mk-1A deliveries in 2027.

The development of the Arjun Mk2 is occurring at a pivotal juncture for the Indian Army. The changing demands of the battlefield necessitate lighter, more adaptable tanks with superior protection against emerging threats. If successfully developed, the Mk2 has the potential not only to meet these requirements but also to establish India as a leading producer of advanced armored vehicles on the global stage.
