In a monumental leap to fortify national security, India is visibly amplifying its Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) coverage, extending protection to major cities in the southern region. Satellite Confirmation: ELM-2090S Spectra Radar in Bangalore

Recent satellite images confirm a new installation near Bangalore featuring the ELM-2090S Spectra, an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) air defense radar. This development marks a significant enhancement of India’s BMD coverage, originally designed for the Delhi-NCR Region and Mumbai. The extension to major southern cities, such as Bangalore and Chennai, underscores India’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its defenses against potential ballistic missile threats.

DRDO Milestones: Advancing India’s Missile Defense Program

The Defense Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), the driving force behind India’s missile defense program, has successfully concluded Phase I and initiated testing for longer-range Interceptor missiles under the Phase-II program. A pivotal moment occurred with the maiden flight-test of the Phase-II Ballistic Missile Defence interceptor AD-1 missile on November 2, 2022, from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.

The AD-1 interceptor missile is engineered to operate in both low exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric conditions, enabling interception of long-range ballistic missiles and aircraft. Propelled by a dual-stage solid propulsion system and featuring a domestically engineered sophisticated control system, navigation, and guidance algorithm, the AD-1 is designed to intricately steer the interceptor vehicle with precision toward its intended target.

Successful Integration of BMD Weapon System Elements

The successful integration of all BMD weapon system elements, strategically positioned across diverse geographical locations, highlights the collaborative efforts propelling India’s missile defense capabilities forward. The expansion of BMD coverage to southern cities aligns seamlessly with the evolving threat landscape, ensuring a more comprehensive defense shield for the nation.

Proactive Approach in Phase II: New Interceptor Missiles in Focus

As India strides into Phase II of its BMD program, the focus on developing two new interceptor missiles underscores a steadfast commitment to leading the way in ballistic missile defense technology. This proactive approach reflects the nation’s dedication to fortifying its defenses against evolving threats, securing a safer and more resilient future.
