Indian Air Force all set to increase the firepower of Tejas Mk1A with French HAMMER Missiles

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up to empower its upgraded Tejas Mk1A light combat aircraft by incorporating the formidable HAMMER (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range) missile system. This enhancement, currently in progress under the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), will significantly augment the Tejas’ ground assault capabilities.

In 2021, India made a procurement of undisclosed quantities of HAMMER kits from French manufacturer Safran, tailored specifically for the Mk1A variant of the Tejas LCA. Distinguished by its modular framework, the HAMMER system offers adaptability by accommodating various guidance units and supporting diverse ordnance payloads. Such flexibility empowers the Tejas Mk1A to engage an extensive array of ground targets, including fortified bunkers, with surgical precision from extended stand-off distances of up to 70 kilometers.

The timing of HAMMER missile integration holds paramount significance, aligning with the scheduled commissioning of the inaugural Tejas Mk1A squadron later this year. This advanced weaponry system will furnish the Mk1A with a decisive advantage in contemporary aerial combat scenarios.

The IAF’s keen interest in the HAMMER is further underscored by its prior acquisition of approximately 300 HAMMER kits for its fleet of Dassault Rafale fighters. This concurrent integration on both the Rafale and Tejas Mk1A underscores the IAF’s unwavering dedication to outfitting its fighter aircraft with state-of-the-art air-to-ground armaments.
