The Indian Navy is vigorously championing the development of Extra-Large Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (XLUUVs) as a pivotal asset for safeguarding the expansive Indian Ocean region. These sophisticated underwater drones promise significant advancements in underwater surveillance and strategic operations.

The Navy plans to deploy approximately two dozen XLUUVs to patrol the Indian Ocean seabed, with a primary focus on detecting Chinese submarines operating in the area.

These XLUUVs will not be restricted to submarine detection alone. They will be outfitted with versatile sensors capable of identifying hostile warships as well. Additionally, these underwater drones will feature modular payload bays, which can be configured with a variety of equipment combinations, enabling the XLUUVs to execute a wide array of missions.

A key element of the XLUUV initiative is maximizing operational autonomy. The objective is for these underwater drones to operate independently for extended periods, thereby reducing the need for continuous surface support.

One of the main challenges in operating UUVs underwater is maintaining communication. Radio waves do not penetrate water effectively, making real-time control from surface ships or land stations challenging.

The Indian Navy envisions deploying these XLUUVs primarily in the strategically crucial Malacca Strait, a vital chokepoint for entry into the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) via the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This strategic deployment will enable comprehensive monitoring of the region’s underwater activities.
