Indian-Origin Jews from Bnei Menashe Community Join Israeli Defense Forces in Wake of Hamas Attacks

Over 200 members of the Indian-origin Jewish community, Bnei Menashe, who recently migrated to Israel, have reportedly joined the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for active or reserve duty following the October 7 attacks by the Palestinian group Hamas. The integration of these individuals into the IDF has been attributed to either voluntary enlistment or being called up for military service, reflecting a collective response to the security challenges faced by Israel.

As per a report by the Jerusalem Post, citing information from the Shavei Israel nonprofit, approximately 75 recent immigrants from India willingly volunteered for military duty in the aftermath of the Hamas attacks. Additionally, around 140 individuals from the Bnei Menashe community residing across various settlements in Israel were summoned for military service.

Shavei Israel, a nonprofit organization based in Jerusalem, founded by Michael Freund, has played a significant role in advocating for the immigration of the Bnei Menashe community to Israel. The organization aims to strengthen Israelโ€™s connections with Jewish diaspora communities worldwide and has been instrumental in facilitating the integration of the Bnei Menashe into various aspects of Israeli society.

The Bnei Menashe community claims descent from one of the Lost Tribes of Israel and has been seeking immigration to Israel for many years. Shavei Israel has actively lobbied for the mass immigration of the Bnei Menashe, and this recent enlistment in the IDF reflects their commitment to contributing to the defense and security of their adopted homeland.
