India’s Draft National Strategy Aims to Make Country a Robotics Leader

India has unveiled its ambitious roadmap for the AI and robotics sectors, aiming to propel the nation’s digital economy to a valuation of one trillion dollars and establish itself as a global frontrunner in robotics by 2030. The government recently released the draft national strategy on robotics, inviting public feedback and engagement to shape the future of this transformative field.

According to Union Electronics and IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the current focus lies on the establishment of three centers of excellence for AI and robotics, with plans to expand this number to around 20. The envisioned trajectory involves leveraging AI to drive advancements in the manufacturing industry, healthtech, and agritech domains, thereby fostering comprehensive growth and development.

The strategy aligns with the broader vision of ‘Make in India 2.0’, identifying robotics as a key sub-sector in India’s integration within the global value chain. It emphasizes bolstering the entire innovation cycle of robotics, establishing a strong institutional framework, and fostering a collaborative ecosystem for effective implementation.

India has already positioned itself among the top ten nations in the adoption of industrial robots. The proposed policy seeks to build upon this foundation, aspiring not just to be a significant user of robotics but also a manufacturing and technological hub for this rapidly evolving industry.

The envisioned holistic approach aims to enhance India’s industrial capabilities, drive domestic value addition, boost employment opportunities, and propel the nation as a global ‘Robotics Hub’. Leveraging the momentum of the government’s existing AI initiatives, the strategy envisions a seamless integration of AI and robotics to maximize societal benefits and foster comprehensive technological advancement.

The policy intends to create an enabling environment for the sector’s growth, nurturing innovation and economic expansion. Open for public and stakeholder feedback until the end of the month, the strategy encourages active participation from all relevant stakeholders to shape the trajectory of robotics technology in India. With this forward-thinking approach, India is poised to unlock the transformative potential of AI and robotics, driving the nation towards global leadership in the field.
