The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to facilitate the transfer of technology (ToT) for the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) to a private company. This initiative aligns with India’s efforts to promote active private sector participation in the space economy.
In July, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), acting as the central agency for fostering India’s space industry, issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to facilitate the technology transfer of SSLV to Indian businesses. This move aimed to empower the private sector to play a more prominent role in space endeavors.
On September 14, IN-SPACe Chairman Pawan Goenka disclosed that a total of 23 companies had expressed interest in acquiring the SSLV technology through ToT. This significant response highlights the private sector’s enthusiasm for participating in India’s space initiatives.
Chairman Goenka emphasized the comprehensive nature of the SSLV’s technology transfer, stating that ISRO is entrusting the private sector with the entire design and capabilities of the launch vehicle. This represents a groundbreaking milestone, as it marks one of the first instances globally where a space agency is transferring the complete design of a launch vehicle to private hands.
While 23 companies have shown interest in acquiring the SSLV technology, only one company will be chosen for the technology transfer. The selection process will determine the recipient company that will gain access to this cutting-edge technology.
