Srinagar: In response to recent incidents, anti-militancy search operations continued on Thursday at many locations around the Jammu division. During the investigation, more than 50 persons were taken into custody. According to J&K police commissioner RR Swain, the forces are mapping their resources to give befitting response to foreign militants operating in the region.

Since June 9 evening, the Jammu division has experienced four militancy-related events in three districts: Reasi, Kathua, and Doda, killing nine civilians and one CRPF personnel and injuring 34 civilians.

“War has been foisted on us, and we are mapping our resources to respond appropriately to this challenge, which we had ovecome previously. Swain told reporters in Jammu, “We may have to bear some minor losses.” He went on to say that the foreign militants have no family or stake in the country, making them look capable of causing more harm.

“They operate outside the law and have no one here, so their potential for harm appears to be greater. We will beat them in the same way that we did between 1995 and 2005 in the Jammu area,” Swain said.

On June 9 evening, terrorists attacked a 53-seater bus bringing pilgrims from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan from Shiv Khori shrine to Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Reasi, killing 9 and injuring 33.

In the intervening night of June 11 and 12, militants targeted civilians in Hiranagar area of Kathua district, following which two foreign terrorists were killed, one civilian injured and ammunition seized as well. Police has released sketches of the suspected attackers. On June 12 evening, militants attacked a joint checkpoint of police and army at Chattergala area in Bhaderwah of Doda district in which five army personnel and a special police officer were injured. In another exchange of fire, one SOG personnel was injured in Bhalesa area of Doda. The search operation is going on in all the areas. In connection with the attack in Reasi, police has detained at least 50 persons for questioning and also released sketch of the attacker. “We will kill the enemy one by one. We will reduce their life span as much as possible after they infiltrate in this region. Their intent is to disturb the peaceful environment here,” said Swain, adding “they cannot find people to recruit from here they send their own people from across.”

According to the police, there are currently about 30 active local militants, the fewest in the previous 30 years, while there are between 70 and 80 foreign terrorists operating in J&K, particularly in the Pir Panjal and Chenab Valleys in southern Kashmir.

“Those supporting terrorists will repent and they have to realise that their families, properties, orchards and everything else is here. Such elements are being identified and they will be held accountable,” he said.
