Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KS&EW) witnessed a momentous occasion on Wednesday with the keel laying ceremony of the second Hangor-class submarine, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s naval modernization efforts.

Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff, graced the ceremony as the chief guest, highlighting the importance of this project for Pakistan’s maritime security. This development signifies steady progress towards acquiring a fleet of eight Hangor-class submarines, bolstering the nation’s underwater capabilities.

As per the agreement between Pakistan and China, the construction of these submarines is divided. Four are being built at Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry in China, while the remaining four, including the newly laid keel, are being constructed at KS&EW under a technology transfer agreement. This collaboration not only strengthens Pakistan’s naval power but also fosters its indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.

This keel laying ceremony follows the successful commencement of the first Hangor-class submarine’s construction in December 2022, which is already progressing at an advanced stage. With the second submarine now underway, Pakistan inches closer to realizing its vision of a robust submarine fleet, ensuring greater maritime deterrence and safeguarding its national interests.
