India’s Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is inviting industry collaboration for a crucial component of its Advanced MANPAD (Man-Portable Air Defense) system, known as the Very Short Range Air Defense System (VSHORADS).
The VSHORADS system is a homegrown innovation by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in conjunction with other DRDO labs and industry partners. It serves as a man-portable missile system designed to counter low-altitude aerial threats effectively.
DRDO is specifically seeking an industrial partner to develop a vital component of the VSHORADS – a remotely operated launcher with a 360-degree swivel capability. This launcher will be equipped with two missile tubes, enabling the system to launch missiles at rapid one-second intervals.

The missiles used in the VSHORADS system are powered by dual-thrust solid motors, ensuring optimal portability and ease of use for soldiers in the field. The design of the launcher prioritizes portability, ensuring that the air defense system remains highly mobile and adaptable.
The Indian Army has shown keen interest in deploying the VSHORADS system not only in its man-portable configuration but also on Light Military Vehicles. This move enhances the system’s operational flexibility, allowing it to be deployed in a variety of scenarios.
DRDO’s initiative to collaborate with industry partners for the development of the VSHORADS launcher underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its indigenous defense capabilities. The VSHORADS system represents a significant advancement in air defense technology and highlights India’s strides in developing cutting-edge military equipment.
