The Army’s Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has initiated plans to construct a 4 km-long double-lane road in Uttarkashi district, connecting to the Gangotri national highway. This road project aims to bypass a challenging 21-km stretch of the highway at Sukki Top, known for its steep inclines that often inconvenience vehicles traveling on this route.
The proposed bypass road is expected to bring several benefits, including:
- Shorter Route to Gangotri Shrine: Upon completion, the road will reduce the distance to the Gangotri shrine, one of the Char Dhams, by approximately 10 km. This will make the pilgrimage journey more accessible for devotees.
- Improved Connectivity: The new road will enhance connectivity in the region, facilitating smoother movement for military convoys heading towards the India-China border in the Nelong Valley area.
According to BRO commandant Vivek Shrivastav, the proposal for constructing this bypass route has been finalized following a recent survey. Currently, a detailed project report (DPR) is in the works, with construction expected to commence next year. This project will be an integral part of the broader Char Dham all-weather road project, which aims to enhance infrastructure and connectivity in Uttarakhand.
