India is expanding defence footprints in the Mediterranean region with General Dimitris Houpis, the Chief of the General Staff of the Greek Armed Forces, planning a visit to India next week following the elevation of their bilateral relations to a ‘Strategic Partnership’.

During the visit the two countries will sign a Military Cooperation Program which includes exercises and joint activities with personnel from all three branches—the Army, Navy, and Air Force— as well as the Special Forces.

The Military Cooperation Program will be implemented in the coming months, and Greek fighter jets will travel to South Asia for the first time to participate in the “Tarang Shakti” exercise. Both the Air Force possess Rafale fighter jets.

Greece and India are looking to enter into defence industrial cooperation. During the visit of the Greek PM in February the leaders reaffirmed their shared objectives to advance defence cooperation, including defense industrial collaboration and innovation.

Greek defence experts are of the opinion that Athens should consider importing BrahMos missiles from India as a deterrence against Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

During the February visit, both leaders reinforced their commitment to a free, open and rules-based Mediterranean Sea and Indo-Pacific, in accordance with the international law of the sea as reflected in UNCLOS, and with full respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and freedom of navigation to the benefit of maritime security and international peace and stability. It was agreed that the relevant Authorities would exchange legal and technical know-how on maritime security and UNCLOS issues in an institutionalized manner.
