In order to strengthen its defences against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has released Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for three critical systems.
All three systems must interface with the IAF’s current air defence, communication, and anti-drone networks and be deployable on rooftops or in unprepared areas. With this procurement, the IAF will be better equipped to protect personnel and vital infrastructure from the growing drone threat.
Among these systems are:
- Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS): A maximum of 200 C-UAS are being pursued to provide multisensor air situation awareness and vehicle-mounted countermeasures against several drones at once. In order to minimise collateral damage and enforce no-fly zones, the C-UAS should be able to detect, track, identify, designate, jam, and neutralise threats.
- Ten Micro Munitions Systems (MMS) are needed to defend IAF bases against swarm drone attacks. These transportable, radar-controlled platforms will each unleash 128 guided missiles capable of automatic or manual firing in numerous salvos and directions to effectively engage targets.
- Ten Kamikaze Drone Systems (KDS) will offer an additional line of protection against swarm drones. Each launcher will be equipped with fifty explosive-loaded kamikaze drones, which, if detected, can be directed towards the targets for self-destruction. Together with guided weapons, the KDS will employ radio frequency detectors and radar to neutralise threats and provide a complete aerial image.
In India’s efforts to improve its drone defence capabilities, the RFPs represent an important step forward. With drones becoming more and more common in both the military and commercial spheres, the IAF’s investment in these cutting-edge technology shows that it is committed to maintaining airspace security and staying ahead of any potential threats.
