Indian Air Force Chief Emphasizes Networked Simulator Modernization

The Indian Air Force (IAF) boasts an impressive fleet, with the Russian-origin Sukhoi-30MKI and the French-origin Dassault Rafale standing out as key players. To keep these fighter jets in top combat readiness, IAF facilities across the country use simulators for pilot training. However, these simulators operate independently, which poses limitations in preparing for complex combat scenarios and large-scale missions. IAF Chief VR Chaudhari underlines the urgency of modernizing and integrating these simulators to create a networked training environment that emulates real combat scenarios, emphasizing the importance of “Train as we fight and fight as we train.”

IAF’s existing simulators are valuable tools for training pilots to perform tasks like take-offs, landings, day and night operations, mid-air refueling, and more. These simulators can simulate multiple aircraft participating in missions. However, they are limited in that only one primary plane is piloted by a human, while the others are computer-generated.

The Air Chief envisions a solution where multiple pilots across India, each on their respective simulators, can virtually operate different types of fighter planes and participate in the same mission through networked simulators. This approach is akin to a multiplayer video game, where different players control their respective characters.

The modernization and integration of simulators are crucial in the ever-evolving world of aviation. Air Chief Chaudhari highlights the role of cutting-edge technology in this transformation, including 5G connectivity, faster data rates, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), and more. These technologies offer new opportunities for enhanced training, skill development, and readiness within the IAF.
