Indian Army to Raise 2 Additional Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Regiments at China Border

The Indian Army is taking a significant stride to bolster its firepower along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. This initiative involves the formation of two new regiments equipped with the indigenous Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).

The Pinaka MLRS, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), stands as a long-range weapon system crafted for swift and precise firepower delivery. These regiments will notably augment the Indian Army’s capacity to engage targets deep within hostile territory.

While the initial timeline aimed to raise these regiments by 2024, the current emphasis is on expedited deployment. Sources confirm that the process to raise two regiments is already in progress and is slated for completion within the next 6-9 months. This accelerated schedule underscores the priority placed on fortifying border defenses amidst the ongoing tensions along the LAC.

The deployment of these Pinaka regiments serves as a strategic response to the persistent border standoff in Eastern Ladakh. These highly mobile and potent rocket launchers will be positioned along the northern borders, augmenting the four operational Pinaka regiments stationed along the western and northern frontiers.

In military parlance, an artillery unit is commonly denoted as a regiment. A typical Pinaka regiment comprises three batteries, each equipped with six launchers. This arrangement allows for a devastating salvo of 72 rockets fired within a mere 44 seconds, effectively neutralizing enemy positions within a 1000m x 800m area. Additionally, upgraded iterations of Pinaka ammunition feature an extended range of 75 kilometers with heightened precision.

The deployment of these Pinaka regiments signifies a pivotal stride towards India’s self-reliance in defense technology. The Pinaka system, designed and developed by DRDO, represents a significant leap in indigenous weapons manufacturing.
