Prototype of India’s Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) program expected by 2028

Recently, at the Dubai Air Show, India’s Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) programme, a significant effort to support naval air power, attracted notice. Deputy Project Director Ravinder Kumar Jyoti discussed the plans and status of the programme in an interview with Indian media.

Although there was a lot of curiosity in the stunning model that was displayed in Dubai, Jyoti clarified that the programme is still in the preliminary design review (PDR) phase. This is an important stage where the design is carefully evaluated to make sure it satisfies all operational and technological criteria. Only then can detailed design and development be started.

Even though the programme is just getting started, Jyoti is optimistic about its schedule. He affirmed that the prototype is anticipated by 2028, which represents a critical turning point in the development of the project.

Jyoti emphasised the close cooperation between the Navy and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) to ensure the program’s success. Frequent collaboration between HQ and the Naval Team is promoting a coordinated approach, which is necessary to convert operational requirements into technical specifications with ease.

Jyoti also recognised the importance of the lessons learned during the LCA Navy Mk1 programme. The TEDBF programme will be streamlined and optimised with the help of the knowledge gained in creating this fighter jet for aircraft carrier operations, which could result in quicker development and lower costs.
