South Korean Industry Delegation Explores Defense Collaboration with India

A South Korean industry delegation comprising eleven companies is set to engage with the Indian defense industry to explore opportunities for joint ventures, technology transfer, and bilateral trade across multiple segments. This delegation will accompany South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol during the upcoming G20 Summit and aims to discuss potential collaborations in areas such as artillery, radar and satellite communication, military power systems, and aerial and naval platform sub-system supplies.

President Yoon Suk Yeol’s visit to India marks his maiden trip to the country and will include bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This visit follows Deputy National Security Advisor Vikram Misri’s tour to Seoul last month for the 4th India-South Korea Deputy NSA-level Strategic Dialogue, aimed at strengthening defense industry cooperation.

The Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM), the apex body of the Indian defense industry, has arranged a meeting with the visiting South Korean companies on September 7 to push for concrete outcomes. SIDM has established various platforms for engagement with the South Korean defense industry and holds Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Korean Defence Industry Association and the Changwon Industry Promotion Agency.

Both India and South Korea have a roadmap for defense industry cooperation, which was signed in September 2019. Both countries see the potential to enhance cooperation in critical and emerging technologies.

This visit and collaboration efforts underline the growing interest in defense cooperation between India and South Korea, aiming to bolster defense capabilities and promote technological exchange.
