New Delhi: In some good news for India, the training launch of Short-Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-1’ was carried out successfully from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha today.

‘Agni-1’ is a proven very high-precision missile system. The user training launch, carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, successfully validated all operational and technical parameters, said Defence Ministry.

Earlier on June 1, India had carried out another successful training launch of the Agni-1 ballistic missile that validated all operational and technical parameters of the strategic weapon. The defence ministry had then said the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) carried out the missile launch from APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha.

“Training launch of Short-Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-1’ was carried out successfully from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha on December 07, 2023. Agni-1 is a proven very high precision missile system. The user training launch, carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, successfully validated all operational and technical parameters,” a statement read today.

The Defence Ministry had said that the missile is capable of striking targets with a very high degree of precision.

“The missile is a proven system, capable of striking targets with a very high degree of precision. The user training launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile,” it said.

Notably, India has developed various variants of the Agni series of missiles. In October last year, India successfully fired ‘Agni Prime’ – a new generation of ballistic missiles – from off the coast of Odisha. Defence officials said all test objectives were met and said the third consecutive (and successful) test of the ‘Agni Prime’ had ‘established the accuracy and reliability of the system’.

In December 2022, India successfully test-fired nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-V that can strike targets at ranges up to 5,000 km. The Agni 1 to 4 missiles have ranges from 700 km to 3,500 km and they have already been deployed.

The first test was in June last year and the second in December. On both those occasions too the missile ‘followed textbook trajectory and met all mission objectives with a high level of accuracy’, officials said.
