TATA to Challenge DRDO/Kalyani ATAGS-based MGS with its own 155mm/52 caliber MGS for Indian Army Mounted Gun System Requirement
TATA Advanced Systems and DENEL systems 155mm T5-52 Self-Propelled Howitzer mounted on a TATA heavy-duty truck

TATA Advanced Systems steps up to fulfill the Indian Army’s need for 814 Mounted Gun Systems (MGS) with its innovative 155mm/52 caliber mounted gun system. This bold move intensifies the competition, injecting vigor into the race for securing this vital defense contract.

Diverging from the path of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) developed by DRDO and Kalyani Strategic Systems, TATA presents its unique mounted gun system. Inspired by Denel’s 155mm T5-52 Self-Propelled Howitzer, TATA’s gun is ingeniously mounted on a domestically designed TATA 8×8 high-mobility vehicle.

TATA’s MGS stands out with its remarkable performance metrics. With a range of 31km using a boat tail projectile, extending to 42km with a base-bleed projectile, and an impressive 55km with a Very Long Artillery Projectile (V-LAP), this system proves its versatility and strength. Moreover, its firing capacity is equally impressive, capable of launching six rounds per minute. It can unleash a burst of three rounds within a mere 16 seconds and maintain a sustained firing rate of two rounds per minute.

The unveiling of a scale model of their MGS at Aero India 2023 signals TATA’s keen interest in this project. Notably, TATA had introduced a prototype in 2012, and the company emphasizes that substantial refinements have been made since then.

TATA’s entry into the competition elevates the stakes in the Indian Army’s Mounted Gun System (MGS) program. While DRDO’s ATAGS undergoes rigorous testing, TATA’s offering faces an uphill battle for acceptance. The dominance of the ATAGS-based MGS is evident, especially considering the Indian Army’s plan to procure 307 units of the Towed variant of the ATAGS.

TATA Advanced Systems’ foray into the realm of mounted gun systems marks a significant development in India’s defense landscape. While challenges lie ahead, TATA’s innovative approach and formidable performance metrics position it as a strong contender in the pursuit of enhancing the Indian Army’s firepower and operational capabilities.
