Udhampur encounter: J-K police issue sketches of six suspects, announce cash reward

Udhampur: The Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) police have announced a cash reward of Rs 5 to Rs 10 lakh for any information on terrorists involved in the recent attack incident in Udhampur district, officials said on Saturday.

According to officials, Mohammad Sharif, a member of the Village Defence Guards (VDG), was killed after terrorists opened fire on a VDG patrol party in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur on April 28.

The J-K police released sketches of six suspected terrorists involved in the incident.

SSP Udhampur Joginder Singh said, “On April 28, an encounter took place between militants and VDG members in which a VDG member attained martyrdom. After an investigation, sketches of six suspected militants were prepared. A breakthrough was made as one person, Javid from Kathua was found to be involved in the encounter.”

“Sketches of the six suspects have been prepared and appealed to the public that if anyone has any information regarding the suspects, a reward of 5-10 lakh rupees will be provided per suspect,” he added.

Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) RR Swain on May 6 has visited Basantgarh and met the family of the slain VDG member Mohammad Sharif. He expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured them that his sacrifice would not go in vain. DGP Swain was accompanied by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jammu Anand Jain, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Udhampur Reasi range, and other senior police officers.

DGP Swain said, “The sacrifice of the brave jawan, who was killed, will not be in vain if we do not come together to eradicate this terrorism. You people have helped to keep it away and you will still help.”

He further said, “The police are yours, the VDG members are also from your area. We all have to fight together against this terrorism.” Promising strong action against the terrorists, DGP Swain said, “It is very important to identify them. It is said that the infiltrators have not run away yet and we cannot disclose these operation details to anyone.”

He further said, “Identify those who are helping them. We will rectify any shortcomings on our part, if any.”
