The Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), an organization of DRDO, successfully developed the launchers of both Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRAShM) and Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LR-LACM), which was revealed by DRDO’s January 2024 Newsletter, posted by Defence Matrix on X platform.

With an impressive range of 1,500 kilometers, the LRAShM boasts a quasi-ballistic trajectory. This unique feature allows it to ascend to high altitudes before homing in on its target at incredible speeds, ensuring evasion of enemy defenses and delivering pinpoint accuracy upon impact.

Developed by the DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) in Bangalore, the LR-LACM is poised to replace the Nirbhay missile. Designed for deployment across land, air, and marine formations, this missile represents a significant leap in military capabilities.

The LR-LACM concept was first introduced at India’s Defexpo 2020, showcasing DRDO’s commitment to technological advancements in the defense sector. Described as nuclear-capable, this one-tonne missile boasts a length and diameter of 6 m and 0.52 m respectively. Its operational range of 1,000-1,500 kilometers positions it as a crucial component for deployment on warships and submarines.

The LR-LACM is intricately designed with two tapering-chord fold-out wings, spanning 2.7 m, as outlined by the DRDO. Equipped with Small Turbofan Engines (STFEs), upgraded radio frequency (RF) seekers, and other advanced subsystems, this missile represents a technological marvel in the field of defense.

The successful development of LRAShM and LR-LACM launchers signifies a strategic leap for the DRDO and VRDE. The deployment of these advanced missiles holds the potential to reshape defense capabilities, ensuring enhanced precision, evasion tactics, and versatility across land, air, and marine domains.

In conclusion, the recent achievements by VRDE in completing the launchers for LRAShM and LR-LACM underscore India’s commitment to staying at the forefront of military technology. As these missiles enter the deployment phase, they are poised to play a pivotal role in bolstering the country’s defense capabilities and ensuring a secure future.
