On the 21st of December 2023, the Poonch sector in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a terrorist attack targeting two Indian Army vehicles, resulting in the unfortunate loss of four soldiers and severe injuries to three others. This incident underscores the evolving tactics employed by terrorists in their attacks. Responding to the escalating threat, the Indian Army has opted to bolster its troop presence in the Poonch-Rajouri sector while also recognizing the imperative to equip soldiers with vehicles offering enhanced protection against ambushes.

In a positive development, the Indian Army has chosen to deploy advanced bulletproof vehicles in the Poonch-Rajouri sector. Recent reports, following our earlier update on the dispatch of a significant fleet of TATA Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicles (QRFV) by TASL on the 27th of December 2023, indicate that the Mahindra Armado is now being deployed to fortify the protection of our armed forces.

Mahindra secured a substantial order from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for its Armoured Light Specialist Vehicle, commonly known as Armado. In March 2021, the MoD entered into a contract worth INR 1,056 crores with Mahindra Defense Systems Ltd (MDSL) for the supply of 1,300 armored LSVs to the Indian Army. The MDSL is slated to fulfill this order within the next four years, concluding by 2025. The initial batch of Armados was delivered on the 16th of June 2023.

Mahindra Armado is a light-armored specialist vehicle designed for military and defense forces. It can be outfitted with anti-tank guided missile launchers, medium machine guns, and grenade launchers. Additionally, the ALSV is adept at swiftly transporting troops to forward areas, facilitating quick reactions, and supplying ammunition and rations to troops stationed in the frontlines.

The diverse variants of Mahindra ALSV include the 6 to 8-seater Armoured Protection Vehicle for Security, Light Armoured Ambulance, Command and Control Vehicle, Light Mortar 81/82mm Vehicle, and Ammunition Carrier for Light Weapons.

Key features of the Mahindra ALSV include a robust 3.2-liter, 215 HP multi-fuel diesel engine with a 4/6-speed automatic transmission, 4X4 with front and rear differential locks, and a 1,000 Kg payload capacity. Notably, the Armado accelerates from 0 to 160 kmph in just 12 seconds and attains speeds exceeding 120 kmph.

The ALSV boasts ballistic protection up to B7 level and STANAG level 2, ensuring defense against armor-piercing rifles. Moreover, the ASLV provides comprehensive protection on all sides—front, side, and rear—from ballistic threats and explosives. This strategic deployment of Mahindra Armado reinforces the Indian Army’s commitment to safeguarding its personnel with cutting-edge technology in the face of evolving security challenges.
