A British government spokesman confirmed on Thursday that the Royal Air Force (RAF) plane transporting UK Defence Minister Grant Shapps had its signal jammed near Russian territory earlier this week.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening while Shapps was returning from Poland, where he had attended a NATO exercise, aboard an RAF jet. The aircraft encountered “temporary GPS jamming” when flying close to Kaliningrad, located on the Baltic Sea approximately 1,200 kilometers west of Moscow.

Safety and Response
The spokesman stated that the jamming didn’t threaten the safety of the aircraft. It’s not uncommon for aircraft to experience GPS jamming near Kaliningrad, which is Russian territory. The GPS signal interference lasted about 30 minutes, leading to mobile phones losing their internet connection. The aircraft had to resort to alternative methods for location tracking during this time.

Prior to the incident, Shapps witnessed hundreds of troops participating in the Steadfast Defender exercise. This exercise is noted as the largest drills conducted by the US-led military alliance since the Cold War. The UK has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its ongoing struggle against Russia’s invasion since February 2022. London has pledged over 7 billion euros ($8.9 billion) in military aid to Ukraine and has provided training for tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops.

The incident highlights the complexities and challenges faced by military operations in the region, particularly with regard to electronic warfare. Despite such challenges, the UK remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
