Myanmar national deported
Deportation of the first batch of Myanmar nationals has begun, with seven Myanmar nationals already flown from Imphal International Airport to border town Moreh on Friday.

Chief minister N Biren Singh stated X, “First batch of Myanmar nationals who entered India illegally deported today. Although India is not signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it has given shelter & aid to those fleeing the crisis in Myanmar on humanitarian grounds with a systematic approach”.

From March 8 to 11, around 77 Myanmar nationals will be deported from batches. Among the Myanmar nationals to be deported, 55 are said to be women, five are children and the rest are men.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently announced the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar border in order to ensure the internal security of the country and to maintain the demographic structure of India’s Northeastern States bordering Myanmar.

The chief minister informed the assembly recently that out of the total 6,746 illegal Myanmar immigrants found in Manipur since the ongoing ethnic conflict unfolded on May 3, 2023 till February 27, 2024, 259 of them were pushed back to their country after recording their biometrics details.

Replying to the questions raised during question hour on the fourth day of the assembly session, Singh said the rest of the illegal immigrants have been kept at temporary shelter homes.

The CM further said that 213 persons have died owing to the ongoing violence, and out of them, 198 were identified as civilians, including 20 women and 8 children.

Manipur has witnessed unprecedented violence since May 3, 2023, after the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was called to oppose the demand for inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
