In a video message released on Friday, Malaysia’s former prime minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, made thought-provoking comparisons between the conflicts in Kashmir and Palestine. He emphasized that Indian authorities seemed to be following a playbook similar to that of Israel when dealing with the residents of the disputed Himalayan territory.
Dr. Mahathir’s statement was played during an event organized by the Pakistan High Commission in Malaysia to commemorate October 27 as “Black Day.” This date marks the 76th anniversary of India’s takeover of a significant portion of Kashmir, which is a contentious issue between India and Pakistan.
While both India and Pakistan lay claim to the entirety of Kashmir, they only control specific regions, leading to conflicts and border skirmishes over the disputed territory. The region has been a flashpoint for decades, with both countries engaged in wars and continued tensions.
Dr. Mahathir, a respected Malaysian politician, drew attention to the actions of what he referred to as “ruthless regimes” that claim to support democracy but implement apartheid-like policies. He pointed out that these regimes often express outrage when their victims respond to their actions, even though these responses are typically on a much smaller scale compared to the initial aggressive attacks.
Furthermore, Dr. Mahathir highlighted the tendency of such regimes to label freedom fighters as terrorists, obscuring the fact that their long-standing policies of apartheid, genocide, and ethnic cleansing are likely to provoke resistance from those subjected to these actions.
