Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced the successful completion of trials for its 30-kilowatt laser weapon system, marking a significant advancement in directed-energy weapon technology. This powerful system is now primed for mass production and user trials.
The laser weapon boasts a substantial operational range, capable of neutralizing helicopters and drones up to 5 kilometers away. DRDO suggests that future enhancements could further extend this range, enhancing its effectiveness against aerial threats.
In addition to ground-based applications, DRDO has also developed a Shipborne Laser Weapon System (SLWS) using the same core technology. This versatile system, weighing under 8 tons, can be deployed on warships and adapted for integration onto trucks for Army and Air Force use.

The laser weapon is equipped with an advanced Electro-Optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor, providing 360-degree coverage. This sensor suite, coupled with user-defined Detection, Recognition & Identification (DRI) ranges, ensures precise targeting capabilities. Moreover, the system can jam communication and control signals, as well as positioning satellite signals used by drones, significantly enhancing its defensive capabilities.
DRDO highlights the exceptional mobility of the 30-kilowatt laser weapon, which can be transported by air, rail, road, and sea, enabling rapid deployment to address emerging threats across various terrains.
Looking ahead, DRDO is working on a larger 300-kilowatt laser system designed to counter sub-sonic cruise missiles and other projectiles, pushing the boundaries of directed-energy weapon technology even further.
