Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine on Friday, during the G7 summit held in the Apulia region of Italy. This marks the second occasion where PM Modi and Zelenskyy have convened on the margins of a G7 summit, following their previous encounter in Hiroshima in May last year.

Upon his arrival at Borgo Egnazia in Italy on Thursday, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy met the world leaders at the 50th Summit of the Group of Seven (G7) in a session devoted to the situation in Ukraine.

Last week, Zelenskyy extended a warm invitation to Prime Minister Modi to visit Ukraine at “a convenient time”.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations and Discussing the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

PM Modi reportedly met Zelenskyy and was briefed on the different aspects of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. In a bilateral meeting, PM Modi assured the Ukrainian President that India continues to encourage a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. PM Modi also expressed his desire to build strong relations with Ukraine.

“India is eager to further cement bilateral relations with Ukraine. Regarding the ongoing hostilities, reiterated that India believes in a human-centric approach and believes that the way to peace is through dialogue and diplomacy,” said PM Modi.

“The leaders reviewed bilateral relationship and exchanged views on situation in Ukraine. PM conveyed that India continues to encourage peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy,”MEA spokesperson said in a post on X.

The two global leaders were seen sharing a hug as they met.

Commitment to Peace and Dialogue

In March this year, PM Modi held a telephonic conversation with the Ukraine President discussing ways to further strengthen the India-Ukraine partnership. PM Modi had conveyed India’s consistent support for all efforts for peace and bringing an early end to the conflict.

Ahead of the G7 Summit, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy emphasized the summit’s dedication to Ukraine, its defense, and economic resilience, expressing anticipation for important decisions. President Zelenskyy also planned meetings with other world leaders and the IMF Managing Director.

“Today is the G7 Summit in Italy, a meeting of our closest partners. Much of it will be dedicated to Ukraine, our defence, and economic resilience. And we look forward to important decisions today,” President Zelenksyy said in a post on X.

Other Engagements at the G7 Summit

Prior to the meeting with the Ukrainian President, PM Modi held bilateral meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Apart from exchanging views on key global and regional issues, PM Modi and President Macron held discussions on a series of issues including strengthening the partnership between the two nations.

Looking Forward to Productive Discussions

PM Modi is in Italy’s Apulia to participate in the Group of Seven (G7) Summit. After landing, PM Modi said he was looking forward to engaging in productive discussions with world leaders. The G7 countries are the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, and Britain. The leaders of G7 nations will also be joined by the chiefs of the European Council and the European Commission.
