Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) is poised to achieve a monumental feat in Indian shipbuilding with the impending delivery of the inaugural Project-17 Alpha (P-17A) frigate, christened “INS Himgiri,” slated for mid-2025. This milestone underscores India’s journey towards self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing.

GRSE is making remarkable strides in the construction of the P-17A frigates, showcasing the nation’s capabilities in indigenous shipbuilding. The first vessel, INS Himgiri, is on schedule for delivery by August 2025, marking a pivotal moment in India’s maritime defense capabilities.

The P-17A frigates epitomize India’s commitment to technological advancement and self-reliance in defense production. With an impressive 75% indigenous content, these warships are equipped with cutting-edge weaponry, sensors, and advanced systems, positioning them as formidable assets in the Indian Navy’s fleet.

Built upon the success of the Project 17 (Shivalik Class) frigates, the P-17A class showcases enhanced stealth capabilities, reinforced weaponry, and state-of-the-art sensor systems. This leap in technology underscores India’s ambition to bolster its naval defense capabilities through innovation and indigenous manufacturing.

GRSE is diligently progressing with the construction of additional P-17A frigates, with the second and third vessels nearing completion stages at 55% and 43%, respectively. Anticipated deliveries in February and August 2026 signify the continuous expansion of India’s naval fleet and reaffirm the nation’s commitment to self-reliance.

The P-17A project, undertaken jointly by GRSE and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), exemplifies the collaborative efforts driving India’s defense manufacturing sector. With seven frigates currently under construction, this initiative not only strengthens India’s maritime defense capabilities but also underscores the expertise of the nation’s Warship Design Bureau in developing advanced naval vessels.

GRSE’s forthcoming delivery of the first indigenous P-17A frigate heralds a new era of self-sufficiency and technological prowess in Indian shipbuilding. As India continues to bolster its maritime defense capabilities, initiatives like the P-17A project underscore the nation’s commitment to fostering indigenous innovation and securing its maritime interests.
