India and Zambia Explore Defense Collaboration, Focusing on Small Arms and Ammunition

India and Zambia have taken a significant step in strengthening their defense ties with a focus on exploring opportunities for collaboration in the manufacturing of small arms, ammunition, and other defense equipment within Zambia. This collaborative effort was discussed during bilateral talks between Defense Secretary Giridhar Aramane of India and Norman Chipakupaku, Defense Secretary & Permanent Secretary of Zambia.

The meeting between the two defense secretaries underscored the historic and longstanding relationship between India and Zambia, with both nations eager to deepen their defense ties. The Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation, signed in 2019, has provided a strong framework for collaboration in various areas of defense.

One of the key areas of cooperation discussed during the meeting was the capacity building and military training of Zambia’s defense forces. India’s Defense Secretary assured Zambia of cooperation in military training and capacity building, offering various military courses and the deputation of Indian training teams to enhance the capabilities of Zambia’s defense forces.

During the discussions, Giridhar Aramane highlighted the capabilities of India’s defense industry, which has made significant strides under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. India’s defense industry, both in the public and private sectors, has developed high-quality and cost-effective equipment. This presents an opportunity for Zambia to modernize its defense forces with the support of Indian defense industries.

Norman Chipakupaku is leading a 15-member delegation from Zambia during their visit to India, scheduled from October 15 to 22. As part of their visit, the delegation had the opportunity to explore various establishments of the Indian armed forces and manufacturing facilities of both public and private Indian defense industries.
