India’s Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, on Sunday initiated discussions with Iranian authorities regarding the situation involving 17 Indian nationals aboard a ship seized off the coast of the UAE.

The ship’s seizure has raised concerns about the welfare and safety of the Indian crew members, prompting Jaishankar to take proactive measures to address the issue.

The minister, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) , wrote, “Spoke to Iranian FM @Amirabdolahian this evening. Took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries.”

“Discussed the current situation in the region. Stressed the importance of avoiding escalation, exercising restraint and returning to diplomacy. Agreed to remain in touch,” he further added.
