BREAKING: Indian Army inducts lighter and more compact version of SWATHI Weapon Locating Radar today for mountainous borders
With the introduction of the smaller and more portable SWATHI Mountains Weapon Locating Radar (WLR), the Indian Army has made tremendous progress in improving its ability to monitor the battlefield. This cutting-edge radar system was designed in-house by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Bengaluru to operate primarily in hilly and high-altitude environments, meeting the particular constraints given by such terrains.
In a noteworthy event, Lieutenant General JB Chaudhari, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (CD&S), officially added the SWATHI WLR to the Indian Army’s artillery inventory by flagging off the weapon in Agra. The Army will be able to more effectively monitor and respond to threats in hilly areas thanks to the help of this cutting-edge radar equipment, which is poised to play a key role in strengthening battlefield surveillance capabilities.
The SWATHI WLR is an improved version of a previous type that was already in use by the Indian Army. 30 units of the older WLR type, which had already been deployed with the Army and had performed admirably across the Line of Control (LoC), were confirmed by BEL authorities. Based on the success of its predecessor, the Army sought a lighter and more compact version for deployment in hilly terrains where mobility and adaptability are critical.

The Radar House Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a top lab of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), along with BEL collaborated to create the SWATHI WLR mountain variant. In order to meet the Indian Army’s long-felt demand for an advanced radar system that is suited for operations in difficult mountain situations, a cooperative development project was launched.
The inclusion of the SWATHI Mountains marks a crucial turning point for India’s defense industry and demonstrates the country’s technological prowess and independence in producing state-of-the-art defense technology. India’s dedication to lowering reliance on foreign defense imports and enhancing domestic defense capabilities is shown in the domestic development of SWATHI.
The SWATHI WLR is outfitted with cutting-edge technologies that allow it to precisely find and monitor enemy artillery and mortar positions, providing the Indian Army with real-time intelligence. With the ability to operate efficiently at high altitudes and in tough mountainous terrains, this radar system will provide a strategic edge to Indian forces, improving situational awareness and response capabilities.
