Indian Army to induct “Rooster” Drone

In a remarkable innovation, the Northern Command of the Indian Army is set to receive Rooster drones, indigenous devices designed to function both as ground-based robots and aerial drones. A special handover event is scheduled to take place at the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) in Gandhinagar, where these cutting-edge surveillance drones will be presented.

The development of these versatile surveillance drones has been made possible through a collaborative effort involving the Indian Army, Hyderabad-based firm Brane Services, and Rashtriya Raksha University. Enabled by GPS technology, these drones have been engineered to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Army’s surveillance operations.

The name “Rooster” for these drones draws inspiration from the bird’s behavior of spending much of its time on the ground. These drones can perform a unique dual role – they are capable of flying and hovering like traditional drones, but they can also operate as ground-based robots. Each drone is enclosed in a protective frame, allowing it to take off and land vertically, as well as roll on the ground. Additionally, the Rooster drones are equipped with cameras, enabling them to land discreetly on structures such as buildings or tree branches, capturing valuable details. This versatility sets them apart from conventional quadcopters.

Colonel Kanvaljit Singh (retired), acting director of the School of Internal Security, Defence, and Strategic Studies (ISDSS) at RRU, explained, “These three drones can be operated by a single controller. The range of a single drone is 400 meters. The other drones in this set can be used as a relay station to achieve a total distance of 1,200 meters.” Notably, the software used in these drones is of indigenous origin, reducing dependence on foreign technology. The Rooster drones demonstrate improved versatility and maneuverability across various terrains, positioning them as an enhanced alternative to their Israeli counterparts.
